The Making of ‘Halo’: Jack Emery on Connection, Creativity, and the Future of Dance Music

Marking his third release to date, San Diego-based producer Jack Emery unveils his enchanting Halo EP on Purified Records, featuring three meticulously crafted tracks: Halo, Above The Clouds, and Rays Of Hope.

Following his debut on the label in 2023 with Believe and his 2024 follow-up EP Fickle Heart, Jack continues to carve out a unique space in the melodic house scape. With his classical training and a flair for merging orchestral influences with electronic beats, the Halo EP highlights his ability to blend introspection and energy seamlessly.

Having earned support from the likes of Sultan + Shepard, Sirius XM Chill, and global festivals and gatherings such as ULTRA Europe and Amsterdam Dance Event, Jack Emery continues to shine with his latest Halo EP, offering a rich and emotionally resonant listening experience that speaks to his growing artistry.

Congratulations on the release of your new EP, Halo! How does it feel to finally share this project with the world?

Thank you!! It’s an awesome feeling and true representation of the more emotional side of my music. I tried to make sure each track in the EP really flowed into the next one and told an uplifting, emotional story.

The title Halo is intriguing. What does it represent to you, and how does it tie into the overall vibe of the EP?

Halo has some of the most intense and ethereal vocals I’ve worked with. The lyrics and delivery of the vocal are a perfect description of the meaning behind the EP, emotional and also deep feelings that invite the listener to gaze up at the sky and reflect on life.

This EP is released through Purified Records. Can you tell us about your relationship with the label and how it has influenced your music?

I’ve always been very inspired by Nora En Pure ever since I saw my first house music set at Coachella in 2016, which turned out to be Nora! Years later I was excited she had launched her own label, Purified, and thought it was a great fit for not only my music but my lifestyle as a scuba diver and ocean lover myself. As for my music, I’ve definitely been influenced by the label’s unique blend of deep/melodic house and techno. Very fortunate to be in the company of so many talented artists on Purified!

Purified has such a strong reputation in electronic music. What drew you to work with them, and how has the partnership shaped your creative journey?

I first reached out to the label as I was searching for a good home for my music and had always been so heavily inspired by Nora En Pure so it naturally felt like a great fit. I love having the freedom to create the music I want to while also having incredible guidance along my music journey from Nora and the Purified team. The partnership has recently even evolved into live shows as direct support for Nora’s Utah and Colorado tour stops which has been a dream come true!

Looking back, what first sparked your interest in making music? Was there a specific moment when you realized this was the path you wanted to pursue?

I played several instruments growing up including cello, piano, and guitar and was part of an orchestra and a rock band. I always knew I wanted to channel this musical background into something bigger and eventually started learning music production in Ableton during lockdowns from the pandemic. From then on I knew I had to follow my dreams as a musician and dj and pursue my music career!

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced when starting out, and how did you overcome them?

There can be a big learning curve when first starting out in music production. There is a ton of knowledge to gain in a small amount of time and some production concepts can be pretty complex. What I found to be helpful when starting out making music was learning as much as possible from tutorials and music professionals on YouTube, as well as leaning on mentors for guidance and feedback.

The electronic music landscape has evolved so much over the years. How do you see your sound fitting into the current scene, and where do you see it going next?

Definitely agree, the music scene in melodic house and techno has seen big shifts recently with new genre trends emerging. I love staying up to date with where the space is heading and what’s hot at the moment, but I also think it’s important to stay true to my own sound and produce the music that flows naturally to me. I try to stay focused on producing music that I enjoy creating and not worry too much about trends. In terms of where my music is headed next, I’ve been exploring both the emotional as well as the deep/driving sides of my music and am excited to share more music soon!

In a time when streaming platforms and social media dominate, how do you approach connecting with your fans and standing out as an artist?

I think it’s important to be relatable as well as add value for fans. I try to look for ways I can help my fans and add value for them instead of just the other way around.

With Halo now out, what’s next for you? Are there any plans for live performances, collaborations, or maybe even more new music in the near future?

I’m staying busy after Halo! I’ve got a remix out next month, finishing a couple singles for the coming months, and a big show coming this spring I’m very excited about. Really excited for 2025 after starting the year as direct tour support for Nora En Pure across multiple USA shows.

Lastly, for those who are just discovering your music, how would you describe what you bring to the table, and what do you hope they take away from your work?

I’d say I bring diverse emotional dance music in my tracks and I try to create music that has depth through atmospheres, dreamy vocals, and melodic synths and pianos. I hope my work resonates with listeners in a way that creates hope, longing, and thoughtfulness wherever they may be listening from.
