In Conversation with Tim Enso: Exploring the Darker Evolution of His Sound on the Sonata EP

Los Angeles-based producer Tim Enso has built a reputation for crafting euphoric, melody-driven electronic anthems, but his latest release, the Sonata EP, marks a bold new chapter in his artistic evolution. Teaming up with INAYA on this two-track project released through Purified Records, Enso delves into darker, grittier sonic territory, blending bass-heavy energy with emotional depth. From the haunting choral chants of the title track to the hypnotic tribal grooves of Faith, the EP showcases Enso’s knack for fusing intricate textures with raw, visceral power.

A classically trained pianist with a passion for merging organic and electronic elements, Tim Enso has carved out a unique voice in the melodic house and techno landscape. His dynamic approach has not only earned him spots on coveted stages and playlists but also solidified his reputation as a forward-thinking producer unafraid to experiment. With the Sonata EP, Enso continues to push the boundaries of his sound, delivering a release that is as captivating as it is unpredictable—a testament to his ability to evolve while staying true to his artistic vision.

Congratulations on your now ‘Sonata’ EP! How has the feedback been so far?

Thank you so much! The feedback has been incredible—listeners and peers alike have shared how much they connect with the energy and emotion of the EP. It’s always a bit nerve-wracking releasing something that represents a shift in your sound, but the reception has really validated the direction I’m exploring.

The EP represents a darker evolution in your sound. What inspired you to take this grittier approach, and how does it reflect where you are as an artist right now?

This shift feels very natural to me at this stage. I’ve been exploring the interplay of tension and release, not just sonically but emotionally. The world has felt heavier in recent years, and I wanted to channel some of that raw energy into a darker, more visceral sound that’s still melodic and captivating. It’s a reflection of growth—not being afraid to delve into shadowy spaces while still holding onto the light.

Can you walk us through your typical creative process when producing a track? How do you start, and how do you know when a song is finished?

I usually start with an idea that sparks emotion—a melody, a chord progression, or even just a specific mood I want to capture. My classical piano background often comes into play early on. From there, I build the rhythm and texture, layering elements to create a full sonic picture. Knowing when a track is finished is more instinctual—it’s when the piece feels balanced and tells a complete story. But truthfully, I have to resist the urge to over-tweak and remind myself that perfection is an illusion.

You’ve often drawn on your classical piano training in your productions. How has that background influenced your creative process and the way you approach electronic music?

It’s been foundational, honestly. Classical training gave me a deep understanding of structure, dynamics, and how to convey emotion through melody. That influence allows me to bring a sense of storytelling to my tracks, even in the electronic realm. I think it’s part of what gives my music its distinctive feel—it’s rooted in timeless musical principles but presented in a modern context.

Melodic house and techno are known for their emotional depth, and your music stands out in this space. What draws you to this genre, and how do you continue to push its boundaries?

The emotional depth is exactly what drew me in. There’s something magical about combining driving rhythms with melodies that pull at your heartstrings—it’s like a dancefloor therapy session. I aim to push boundaries by blending unexpected elements, like orchestral textures or unconventional rhythms, while still keeping things accessible. The goal is to create a journey that surprises but also resonates deeply with listeners.

What has been the most rewarding or surprising part of your journey as a producer so far, especially as you’ve gained recognition on major stages and playlists?

The most rewarding part has been seeing how music can connect people across the world. Knowing that something I’ve created can touch someone’s life, even briefly, is an incredible feeling. A surprising moment was when one of my tracks was played on a huge stage—it was surreal hearing it in that context and realizing how far the music had traveled.

With the ‘Sonata’ EP showing your evolution as an artist, what do you see as the next step in your sound or career?

The next step is to keep experimenting and refining. I’m diving deeper into live performance, incorporating elements of my music skills background into DJ sets. Career-wise, I’m looking to collaborate with artists across different disciplines to expand what my music can communicate. It’s all about growth—both artistically and in how I connect with my audience.

For listeners who are new to your music, how would you describe the essence of what you aim to create and communicate through your work?

At its core, my music is about emotional storytelling. I aim to create sonic landscapes that evoke introspection, connection, and even catharsis. It’s music for people who want to feel something profound while also losing themselves in the rhythm.

What advice would you give to emerging producers who are just starting out in the electronic music scene?

Stay curious and keep experimenting. Don’t be afraid to fail—it’s part of the process. Focus on developing your own sound rather than chasing trends. And most importantly, remember why you started: the love for music. That passion will guide you through the inevitable ups and downs of the journey.

It matters little whether you are an artist or a visitor, the love for music is the unifying factor.
