Dilby surely was on fire in 2018. He delivered 2 EP’s on Mother Recordings and managed to secure back to back Top 10 hits with each release. Well, if this new EP is any indication, 2019 is going to be even bigger.

In order to promote his recent work “Rio Grande / Keep On Dancing” he dropped us a fantastic mix. Tune in and enjoy the interview below.

For fans who don’t know much about you, could you tell us a bit about your music background? How did you fall down the music rabbit hole?
I first discovered house and techno in the ’90s through outdoor raves where I grew up in New Zealand. I used to go to the parties because all my buddies were going but at the time I wasn’t really into electronic music. I was mainly focused on hip hop at this time and still had dreams of being a rapper (I was a terrible rapper by the way, haha). It wasn’t until I moved to a bigger city and started going to clubs in 1999 that I really fell in love with house music and began collecting vinyl and DJing. That passion has stuck with me for almost 20 years now and I would say it has only grown stronger.

How would you describe your sound and style?
Hmm, that’s tough. I just call it house music, but in the current climate, people are obsessed with micro-genre definitions overcomplicating the classification of music. I have a lot of wide-ranging inspiration and I like to explore that in the studio on in my DJ sets. It’s all just house music baby!

What can we expect from the mix you made? Does it contain recent or upcoming work?
It is a pretty good representation of what I love to play; broad ranging house music with a timeless feel and quality. There is stuff in there from some amazing artists like Jansons, Made By Pete, Archie Hamilton, Peace Division (one of my all-time favourite production duos) and the date range spans from 2000 through to currently unreleased tracks. I have included both the tracks from my recent Mother Recordings EP in there and I think they fit in really well with the other tracks.

Tell us a bit about your fresh and highly danceable release “Rio Grande / Keep on dancing“. How did the release come together, influences, …
I’m really excited about the release. The feedback and support from DJ’s have been immense and we are crossing our fingers that it does well now it’s out. Actually, both tracks on the EP came together super quickly and easily. In both cases, I had an idea of what I wanted to do and wrote the tracks in one day each. I went into the studio with a vision of what I wanted to create and how it should sound, which makes it so much quicker and easier than just sitting down at a blank canvas and waiting for inspiration to strike!

What’s your approach or process when starting with a new track? Do you have an idea in mind or do you somehow experiment and see what’s flowing out of this?
I guess I do both at different times. But I think I work best when I have a clear idea in mind of what I want to write before I head to the studio. I have really enjoyed working with vocalists recently and love the inspiration of working together with another artist to create something.

How does your planning for 2019 look like?
There are lots of cool things in the pipeline release wise. The most exciting I think is another release project on Mother Recordings together with Nhan Solo. It’s pretty top secret at the moment but it features one of the hottest vocalists in the game right now and we have been working on it since last summer. But it should be out in May this year I believe, so not long to wait.

If you could solve one major problem in the world today – what would it be and why?
One thing that really grinds my gears is the amount of food we waste in modern society. It is crazy to me that there are people in our society that can’t afford to feed themselves. Or their children, while supermarkets and restaurants literally fill dumpsters with edible food on a daily basis. I don’t know the solution, but I think the law that France passed in 2016 is a step in the right direction.

Thank you !!
