DAVIDEE: get to know the artist

Davidee

Based on the French Island of Corsica, David Halewa aka DAVIDEE has been crafting his brand of melodic house and techno for the last several years. His contemporary club sound has found a home on Three Hands Records, Night Light Company and Oniryzm, while also finding favour with a broad selection of the underground’s tastemakers.

Also, an established DJ in his home city of Ajaccio, David programs music for the region’s top venues on a weekly basis.

Soon he will take part in our Various Artists compilation which we release in collaboration with EMA (electronic Music Anthem). Stay tuned, the release is foreseen for April 14.

Thank you DAVIDEE for your time and welcome at Tanzgemeinschaft.

For our readers who don’t know much about you, could you tell us a bit about your musical background?

I was a resident DJ of many nightclubs in France and beyond that, I now devote myself to my own productions. It was after a short period as a pop-rock drummer that I decided to create my own studio and to integrate The Music Masterclass Ableton Live.

It was finally the world of computers and drum machine synths that caught my attention. Graduate in computer science, I quickly left myself being contaminated with the musical creation of electro.

When working on new music is the dance floor always something you keep in mind? Or does a certain vibe or flow sometimes transcend that?

When I work on a new project, I always keep in mind that the track I create is made for people who will dance, and break free during a festival night or disco night. I also keep in mind the ambient atmosphere that I will imagine for this title.

Sometimes I can be inspired by new current sounds and listen to a lot of diverse musical genres of other talented producers. It might give me some ideas for my next projects.

Later this year you will have a track on our Various Artist compilation. Tell us all about that work. How did this one come together? From idea to creative process to final result.

My collaborator and friend Shemsu offered me to create a title for the compilation of your label Tanzgemeinschaft. We had already worked together on our track Your Skin Feat. Délia on the Chrom Amsterdam 2022 compilation which went pretty well.

This time, we wanted to propose a track with a speaking voice (Délia) and asked Elle Jae to sing for us and bring a new flavour. (Don’t give up)…. We can’t wait to listen to the final rendering master.

Do you believe in the possibility of “reading an audience” – and how do you put it into practice? Is the relationship with the audience on the dancefloor a collaborative one or, as Derrick May once put it, a “battle”?

Of course, it’s the dream of any producer to get the chance to see his tracks evolve on stage. We also take our time to finalize our set in order to give the best of us.

I think the relationship with the audience is different every time. It’s really interesting to create the atmosphere of the evening and increase in power in the set. As a set is very audience dependent, we always have to question ourselves. Nothing is for granted.

What do you find most challenging about the music business?

You have to practice every day and take the time to train in sound design…

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt along the way?

We need to believe in our projects relentlessly. Only work and passion can bring you beautiful creative moments. I don’t give up 🙂

What have you got planned for the rest of the year? Any new music or collaborations we should know about?

With our team, we decided to produce more tracks. I present here some upcoming projects for 2023:

If you could have produced any record in the world, which one would it be?

I love the music from the producers of the group Amê. If I had to produce a title, then it would be the REJ EP composed by the German duo Kristian Beyer and Franck Wiedemann. Surely a great classic of electro music

What are your fondest musical memories? In your house? In your neighbourhood or town?

Yes of course, in my city 🙂 My best memories will remain in clubs where I played for several years… It was a challenge every weekend to keep the dance floor dancing all night long…

Thank you.

Thank you…
