Axel Toben is the electronic music alias behind mastermind multi-instrumentalist, Alejandro Bento. His love for electronic music grew out of the community he was a part of in the Mediterranean town of Javea, Spain. Being geographically the closest point to Ibiza, created a strong musical cross-pollination between the island and the mainland, resulting in many international acts travelling through and elevating the free parties to an entirely new level.
Axel Toben resided in Berlin from 2010 to 2012, a period that cemented his vision and prooved incredibly influential in shaping his current sound. Currently, he lives back in Javea where he has his studio in the Spanish countryside and a healthy artistic community around him.
He recently released “Phonosynthesis” via Subtempo, now he is here with a mix and short interview. Enjoy.

Alejandro, where are you based? And what makes that place special for you?
I’m from Jávea, Spain, currently based here. After travelling and living in different places in the world I’m back in my hometown and have an ideal setup in a perfect spot in the countryside. It is a special place for me because I was born here and Jávea is a beautiful and magical place in the Mediterranean coast, nature is amazing, not many people live here and it is also very close to Ibiza.
When we will visit, what is not to be missed?
Definitely, you have to check out both the seaside and the countryside. Nature here is amazing. It’s an inspiring, nice and relaxed place, and I’m sure you would really enjoy your time here.
What excites you most as a DJ?
Lately, I’ve been more focused on my own productions than DJing. That being said, surely it’s the unexpected sensations that are involved in creating and performing, growing through the creative flow and exploring new sounds.
Where does your passion for electronic music come from?
Truly from the 90s rave techno parties. Really, if I look way back through the 90s when I was a kid, I started listening to electronic music that inspired me and was connected with my artistic perspective. Exploring the reaches of my own perception became a commitment I made to myself for my own wellbeing. From a young age, I decided I wanted to be part of the evolution of this new music and culture, and to this day that is what keeps me connected to the music scene, I am a part of.
How has your music been influenced by other artists musicians or life in general?
As a music collector, it all started with mixtapes, vinyl, CDs … Growing up I did a lot of DJing, in raves and techno parties. I have been influenced and inspired by many close relationships with artists and have always remained connected to the movement.
What can we expect from the mix you made us?
It is a live set I made mixing a few tracks from different artists and also included some of my own unreleased material through which I express my love and personal approach to dancefloor music. Expect deep and powerful hypnotic vibes.
Any news to share regarding upcoming work or gigs?
I’m about to release another EP on Subtempo soon, probably in December, and developing different performances for upcoming gigs.
Thank you.
